Docks are typically vigorous plants with large leaves and flower spikes with many tiny green flowers. As on common sorrel and its smaller relative sheep's sorrel, the flowers often turn red as they age.

The infamous and almost unkillable japanese knotweed also belongs to the family, as do the bistorts such as amphibious bistort, a vigorous aquatic plant that grows both in and beside ponds, lakes and slow-moving streams.
